Great Leap Forward

On Saturday 23 May, in Guangzhou, Chen Fuchao, had climbed on a bridge and was threatening to jump. He wanted to end his life owing to 2 million Yuan (about $293,000) in debt that he couldn’t pay off. Because of him, the traffic was blocked on the bridge during five hours.
The situation got on Lai Jiansheng’s nerves, a 66-year-old man: according to him, suicidal people like Chen Fuchao “are very selfish” and “do not really dare to kill themselves. Instead, they just want to attract the relevant government authorities’ attention to their appeals."
Mr Lai decided to go and try to talk with Mr Chen. He shook hands with him and then pushed him, because of his irritation. He was taken away by the police, and the suicidal man was taken to the hospital, after an eight-metre fall.
For the beginning of April, 12 people have already attempted to jump from the Guangzhou bridge.
According to recent statistics, the Chinese suicide rate would be one of the highest in the world with 287,000 suicides each year.

My opinion:
To my mind, Chinese people are so numerous that the government can’t help all of them to solve their problems. But they should make an effort and take steps to avoid a lot of suicides.

Le Grand Bond en Avant

Samedi 23 Mai, à Guangzhou, Chen Fuchao, était monté sur un pont et menaçait de sauter. Il voulait mettre fin à ses jours à cause d’une dette de deux millions de yuans (soit environ 293.000 dollars) qu’il ne pouvait pas rembourser. A cause de lui, la circulation sur le pont a été bloquée sur le pont pendant près de cinq heures, ce qui a fortement agacé Lai Jiansheng, un homme de 66 ans. Selon lui, les personnes suicidaires telles que M. Chen «sont très égoïstes» et «ne veulent pas vraiment se donner la mort. Elles désirent en réalité attirer sur elles-mêmes l’attention du gouvernement. »
M. Lai a donc décidé d’essayer de parler avec M. Chen, il lui a serré la main et, exaspéré, l’a ensuite poussé dans le vide. Lai a été emmené par la police, tandis que le désespéré était conduit à l’hôpital après une chute de 8 mètres.
Depuis le début d’avril, 12 personnes ont déjà voulu sauter du pont de Guangzhou. Selon de récentes statistiques, le taux de suicide en Chine serait l’un des plus élevés au monde, avec 287.000 suicides chaque année.

Mon opinion :
Pour moi, les Chinois sont tellement nombreux qu’il est impossible pour le gouvernement de tous les aider à résoudre leurs problèmes. Cependant, il devrait faire un effort et prendre des mesures afin d’éviter un maximum de cas extrêmes comme le suicide.
