Sold for an IPhone

Child trafficking is still rife in China with babies sold online by their parents or by kidnappers.

The Chinese police has recently dismantled four networks of baby smuggling. 1,100 suspects were arrested in 27 cities all around China. It saved 382 children. The traffickers used child adopting websites.

Chinese media reports estimate 200,000 children are missing each year. Between 8,000 and 15,000 children, mostly boys (75 %), disappear each year in China. This tragedy is the result of the “one child” policylaunched in the 80’s.

In the countryside, the progeny is paramount as the parents need children to look after them when they get old. The problem is that girls, when they get married and want to follow the tradition have to devote themselves totally to their in-laws. Consequently some people pay up to 5,000 € to buy a baby boy. Sometimes they just want one child to give him later their inheritance.

Two terrible but not exceptional stories can illustrate the situation: a child was sold for drugs and a couple bargained their daughter for 3,600 € to buy an IPhone and some branded clothes. It is very rare that a family with a child from the traffic is found, and even when they are found, they are very seldom punished. The State media seldom cover the issue because of the strict state censorship.

However, Chinese authorities want to fight this plague and the police issued a new app for the general public, to help tackle the problem of child trafficking. With this app, people can report if they see something suspicious. Among the five main categories targeted, but the most important, the first category is gathering information on trafficking and abduction of babies.
