Waiting for the Barbarians

Ai Weiwei, a famous Chinese artist and a human rights lawyer, has been stopped from travelling abroad by the police. They told that his trip to the South Korea, would threaten national security.
The authorities have been working to prevent activists from attending the Nobel ceremony. "This has never happenend to me before and it was such a barbarian act that disrespected the law", said Ai Weiwei, "I think there's a direct connection with next week's Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony.

The Nobel committee warded this year's Peace prize to Liu Xiaobo. He was to receive his prize in Oslo on December 10.
Liu a writer and pro-democracy activist. He was a leader in the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989. Last year, he was sent to jail for 11 years, because he is the author of a document calling for multi-party democracy.Beijing has respnded furously to the Nobel committee's choice.

Since the Nobel decision, MR. Liu's wife and another prominent diddident have been put under house arrest. Nobody can leave China and none of Liu's family of friends will be able to collect the Prize. The Nobel officials said that the award may not be handed out at the ceremony.

The Nobel Foundation described Liu Xia like the "foremost symbol" of the human rights in China, but China denounced him as a criminal.

L'Artiste et les Barbares

Artiste de renom et avocat au service des droits de l'Homme, Ai Weiwei, a été empêché par la police de quitter le pays. Les autorités ont expliqué qu'il ne pouvait quitter la Chine, car ceci mettrait en danger la sécurité nationale.
Cet incident s'inscrit dans le cadre de la répression des dissidents à l'approche de la remise du prix Nobel de la Paix. "Ceci ne m'était jamais arrivé auparavant, c'est un acte barbare commis au mépris de la loi", a déclaré Ai Weiwei, "Je pense qu'il y a un lien avec la remise du prix Nobel de la Paix la semaine prochaine. Le gouvernement chinois est très bouleversé à ce propos".

Liu est un écrivain et un militant pro-démocratique, un des principaux leader des manifestations de la place Tiananman en 1989. L'année dernière, il a été condamné à 11 ans de prison, car il est l'auteur d'un document revendiquant une démocratie pluraliste.
La remise du Prix aura lieu le 10 décembre à Oslo.

Depuis le choix du Comité Nobel a été annoncé, son épouse Mme Liu et un autre dissident ont été assignés à résidence. Personne de son entourage ne peut quitter la Chine et aller recevoir le Prix. Un représentant du Comité Nobel a déclaré que la récompense pourrait ne pas être remise à la cérémonie.

Le comité de Nobel a décrit Liu Xia comme le "premier symbole" des Droits de l'Homme en Chine, alors qu'il est décrit comme un criminel par les autorités chinoises.
