Ai Weiwei : Wanted or Missing ?



The official news agency has the conviction that Ai Weiwei, an artist-activist, is detained by the police for an investigation. He’s suspected of economic crimes. His family said he was blameless. This secret detention has triggered an uproar all over the world. But the police and the government have refused to talk about Ai Weiwei. They have already intervened in some arrests and disappearances of human rights militants.



Ai Weiwei had a hand in designing the Bird’s Nest stadium for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He has had a successful international career along with his involvement in campaigns against government censorship and political restrictions, often using the Internet.



“Police said late Wednesday they are investigating Ai Weiwei for suspected economic crimes in accordance with the law”, said the Xinhua news agency. Further they didn’t give more details of the allegation against Ai, who was stopped on Sunday from boarding a flight from Beijing to Hong Kong. The border police sparked condemnations from Western governments.



“China is a country ruled by law and will act according to law. We hope that the countries concerned will respect China’s decision”, said the Foreign Ministry. “This has nothing to do with human rights or freedom of expression”. But Ai’s older sister said it was more like a crime gang’s behavior than a country with laws.



The U.S ambassador Jon Huntsman, who is leaving his post, said this problem isn’t a simple matter, to such an extent that it could finish into a diplomatic row between two major economies. He said too that the U.S would never stop supporting human rights.



My Opinion:



This news exemplifies the China’s government system and blatant disrespect of human rights. They say that China is a country ruled by law and will act according to law, but they defend themselves very lamely. The Western countries have to demand some answers to this intolerable action, but they aren’t really involved , except the United States because of their economic superiority . They are afraid, because if China breaks their commercial links, it will have a big impact on all these countries’ economies.

Un artiste détenu pour une raison politique ou économique ?



L’agence de presse officielle a déclaré qu’Ai Weiwei, un artiste-militant, était détenu par la police pour enquête. Il est suspecté de « crimes économiques ». Sa famille clame son innocence. Sa détention a produit une vague de protestations à l’étranger. La police et le gouvernement refuse de s’exprimer à ce sujet, après avoir effectué de nombreuses autres arrestations ou soupçonné d’avoir organisé des « disparitions » de militants des Droits de l’Homme depuis février.



Ai Weiwei a déjà connu une carrière internationale très importante. Il s’est engagé parallèlement dans plusieurs campagnes contre la censure gouvernementale et les restrictions politiques sur internet.



« La police a dit, pas plus tard que mercredi, qu’ils enquêtaient sur Ai Weiwei pour crimes économiques », a déclaré l’agence de Xinhua. Cependant ils n’ont pas transmis plus d’informations, sur son arrestation dimanche à l’aéroport de Pékin et sa détention dans un lieu tenu secret. Il a été arrêté par la douane.



« La Chine est un pays régi par la loi et agira selon la loi. Nous espérons que les pays concernés respecteront notre décision » a déclaré le ministre des affaires étrangères. « Ceci n’a aucun rapport avec les Droits de l’Homme ou la liberté d’expression ». Cependant la sœur d’Ai Weiwei a osé une comparaison avec l’action d’une bande criminelle plutôt qu’avec un pays agissant selon la loi.



L’ambassadeur des Etats-Unis, Jon Huntsman qui va quitter son poste, a déclaré que cet affaire n’était pas anodine et que ceci pourrait se par un incident diplomatique entre deux grandes puissances. Il s’est dit inquiet de « l’usage croissant de la détention arbitraire » et a ajouté que les Etats-Unis ne cesseraient jamais de défendre les Droits de l’Homme.



Mon Opinion:




Cet article est un excellent exemple des pratiques des dirigeants chinois qui bafouent les Droits de l’Homme. Ils prétendent que la Chine est un pays régi selon la loi, mais c’est un argument bien faible. Les pays occidentaux ont le devoir de demander des explications sur ce comportement intolérable, mais ils n’ont pas l’air très impliqués, à l’exception des Etats-Unis qui peuvent encore se le permettre. . Les autres pays occidentaux ont peur de perdre les liens commerciaux avec la Chine.
