Saved by toothpicks
On September 27, during a flight from Kashgar to Urumqi in the Xinjiang province of western China, a male passenger was found unconscious. Thirty-eight-year-old Doctor Tian Yu, a rheumatologist was on board when it happened. After a quick analysis he diagnosed that the patient was epileptic. He asked for a spoon and a towel. Tian Yu wrapped the towel around the spoon before inserting it inside the man’s mouth to prevent him from biting his tongue. The doctor had been trained in traditional Chinese medicine so he decided to try acupuncture with toothpicks. Owing to the care of Doctor Yu, after 5 minutes of stimulation the patient recovered. Just 20 minutes later the plane landed and the patient was taken care of by paramedics.

Le 27 septembre dernier, au cours d’un vol entre Kashgar et Urumqi dans la région du Xinjiang, dans l’ouest de la Chine, un passager a perdu conscience. Le Docteur Tian Yu, un rhumatologue âgé de 38 ans se trouvait à bord de l’avion lorsque l’incident survint. Lorsqu’une annonce demanda si un médecin se trouvait dans l’avion, il se présenta et après une rapide analyse, il diagnostiqua que cette personne souffrait d’épilepsie. Il réclama alors une cuillère et une serviette. Tian Yu entoure la serviette autour de la cuillère avant d’introduire cette dernière dans la bouche de l’homme afin d’éviter qu’il ne se morde la langue. Le docteur avait par chance reçu une formation en médecine traditionnelle chinoise. Il décida donc d’essayer l’acupuncture avec des cure-dents. Après 5 minutes de stimulation l’homme fut rétabli grâce aux soins du Dr Yu. Seulement 20 minutes plus tard l’avion atterrit et le malade fut pris en charge par les services médicaux.
